I purchase my lye in\u00a0bulk with special order at my local hardware store.

Lye used to be\u00a0available in most\u00a0grocery stores and hardware stores but police campaigning has\u00a0mostly removed it from those sources (it\u2019s used\u00a0to make Meth).<\/p>\n

The main reason to get \u2018pure\u2019 is to be sure there are no \u2018oils\u2019 in the lye.
\nOils (even a tiny amount) cause the electrolyte to \u2018foam\u2019 (make bubbles like dish soap) and the lye rides out of the machine on the foam.<\/p>\n

You can buy lye online, or example:<\/p>\n

\nIt\u2019s a good idea to buy in smaller sealable bottles, so that moisture won\u2019t get in and cause the lye to set up like cement. \u00a0If it does, it\u2019s still good, but getting it out of the bottle is more of a challenge.<\/p>\n

Always buy 99+% pure.<\/p>\n

For Australian users I found the\u00a0correct Lye which has no impurities added for cleaning drains and that is\u00a0\u201cGlitz\u201d\u00a0Caustic Soda and is readily available at\u00a0\u201cBunnings\u201d Warehouse.<\/p>\n

It does not matter what \u2018form\u2019 it comes in.\u00a0\u00a0Bigger chunks just take longer to dissolve.<\/p>\n

For the model EA-H160, you put in maximum 1 ounce of lye: UNLESS you have installed mechanical gas volume adjustment, then you can put in up to 3 ounces (80 grams) of lye.<\/p>\n

For the model AC50, 3 ounces (80 grams) is the MAXIMUM to have in the machine at one time.<\/p>\n

3 ounces (80 grams) gives you the maximum gas production without excess lye.\u00a0\u00a0Excess lye can cause crystallization; which clouds the sight tube and plugging of hoses and orifices.<\/p>\n

If using a hydrometer to measure specific gravity of the lye solution, it should read about 1.05 @ 20\u00b0C.<\/p>\n
