Next cleaning (maintenance rinse), switch to\u00a0pure lye.<\/p>\n
The two \u2018problems\u2019 are:<\/p>\n
1. That not all Citric Acid is \u2018pure\u2019.\u00a0\u00a0MANY of the samples also contain oils that\u00a0cause foaming in the electrolyzer.<\/p>\n
Foaming causes rapid lye loss as the foam\u00a0rides out of the machine with the gas.<\/p>\n
This also puts lye into the filter and\u00a0humidifier water\u2026 Not Good.<\/p>\n
2. The impurities in some Citric Acid react\u00a0with the lye (NaOH) to form excessive sludge (a\u00a0soapy waxy substance), plugging\u00a0up the machine and\/or requiring excessively short times\u00a0between maintenance\u00a0rinses.<\/p>\n
These things did not happen with the PURE\u00a0Citric Acid that we used for our testing in the\u00a0lab.\u00a0\u00a0So we had no\u00a0idea that these impurities\u00a0existed or what they\u2019d do.<\/p>\n
We originally recommended Citric Acid because\u00a0it had some complementary benefits.<\/p>\n
1. it tended to mitigate the caustic of the\u00a0lye (lowered pH).<\/p>\n
2. it helps keep the machine clean inside.<\/p>\n
3. it tended to REDUCE foaming.<\/p>\n
Citric Acid is NOT an efficient electrolyte\u00a0and does nothing to increase the efficiency of\u00a0generating the gas.\u00a0\u00a0It\u2019s\u00a0uses were complementary.<\/p>\n
We recommended Citric Acid as an OPTIONAL\u00a0addition from the start of the AquaCure\u00a0and now we (embarrassingly) withdrawal\u00a0that recommendation because the \u2018side effects\u2019 of\u00a0the ubiquitous impurities are\u00a0too great.<\/p>\n
